Sermon Message: Matthew 28:16-20
First Reading: Genesis 1:1-2:3 ; Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-14; Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20

We believe in the triune God. He is the only true God. The festival of the Holy Trinity is a time to
celebrate God revealing himself to us as one God in three persons. The triune God wants his people to
teach this mystery in its biblical truth and purity. This festival of the Holy Trinity begins the second half
of the Church Year with a proclamation of people being baptized and blessed in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, the only true God.

Jesus lives, and it makes a difference. The Spirit provides faith and purpose for life. Pentecost, the celebration of the special arrival of the Holy Spirit, is the third great festival of the Church, along with the Nativity and the Resurrection. Pentecost closes the fifty-day period after Easter and ends the festival half of the church year. The Church dresses in red on this day to commemorate the tongues of fire that marked the Spirit's gift as well as the blood of the martyrs.

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: 1 Peter 2:4-10
First Reading: Acts 1:1-11; Gospel: Luke 24:44-53

Without the resurrection of Jesus, we would have to wonder who oversees the world. At times the world seems so chaotic. People claim to be in charge but they have limited power and strange ideas. Many of the ideas are harmful for Christians. Leaders seem to lead without acknowledging Jesus. But he lives, and it makes a difference. Jesus is head over everything for the Church. At the time of Ascension, he takes his proper place. The Festival of the Ascension is one of the oldest
and most joyful celebrations in the Christian Church. It will be observed by Christians until Christ returns to take us to be with him.

Sermon Message: 1 Peter 2:19-25
First Reading: Acts 17:22-31; Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:13-22; Gospel: John 14:15-21

Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would be tempted to live only for myself. After all, I have to be in good shape before I can be of help to anyone else, right? I think I know what's right for me, and I can identify when other people are standing in the way of my self-improvement. If Jesus is dead, I don't have to worry about what he said or what he thinks.
But he lives, and it makes a difference. He takes care of my basic needs. He promises to do more for me than I can imagine. He puts people into my life so I can help them. Now I live for him.

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: 1 Peter 2:4-10
First Reading: Acts 4:8-12; Gospel: John 14:1-11

Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would have to wonder if he wasn't just a human being. If my last view of him is a criminal crucified on a cross, he would look like someone to be rejected. He couldn't even help himself, much less anyone else!
But he lives, and it makes a difference. He is the only way to heaven. This gospel message is the most inclusive message in the world. The benefits of the resurrection of Jesus are meant for every man, woman, and child who has ever lived.

Sermon Message: Luke 24:13-35
First Reading: Acts 2:14a,32-41; Second Reading: 1 Peter 1:17-21; Luke 24:13-35

Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would have little hope for the future. That's how the disciples felt after this death. "We hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel" (Luke 24:19). Their hope for a better life had died along with Jesus.
But he lives, and it makes a difference. My hope for the future is restored. I have victory over the feeling of hopelessness, because the one who heals me and gives me a better life is himself alive. He lives to restore my hope.

Sermon: Pastor David Pagel
Sermon Message: 1 Peter 2:19-25
First Reading: Acts 2:42-47; Gospel: John 10:1-10

Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would have to choose my own direction in life. I would be terrible at it, because, like a sheep, I can generally see only what's in front of me at the moment, and I get myself into trouble. ...
But because Jesus lives, it makes a difference for me. I have the reliable direction of the Good Shepherd. He feeds us with his Word. He protects us from the roaring lion, Satan. He is leading us into the green pastures of eternal life.

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: 1 Peter 1:3-9
First Reading: Acts 2:14a,22-32; Gospel: John 20:19-31

Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would have to wonder whether anything he said was true. Thomas had been taught and trained by Christ himself. He heard Jesus predict his death and resurrection. Even after hearing the eyewitness testimony of friends, Thomas still had doubts about the resurrection of Jesus.
But he lives, and it makes a difference. Today I have great comfort as someone with doubts about Christ's promises in my life. Jesus engages me with continuing assurances in Word and sacrament. I have proof. I have peace.

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: Matthew 28:1-10
First Reading: Jonah 2:2-9; Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11; Gospel: Matthew 28:1-10

Without the resurrection of Jesus, death would appear permanent. No one would have come back from the dead to explain what happens after death. Jesus told his disciples what would happen...
He lives, and it makes a difference! I too shall live. Death has become a pathway into paradise. Jesus has already made me spiritually alive by giving me faith in his resurrection...

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Responsive Psalms

On Good Friday the church remembers the crucifixion of her Lord. Her remembrance, while solemn, is not a message of gloom, but a service of adoration of the Son of God as he offers up his life as the Lamb of God. Good Friday is part of the larger celebration of the mystery of salvation begun Maundy Thursday and culminating in the Easter Proclamation of the Easter Vigil. Good Friday Tenebrae is not a liturgical "funeral" for Jesus, but an austere service of reflection, intercession, adoration of the Lamb, and quiet meditation

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: Zechariah 13:1-3

We need to be washed clean in the blood of Jesus. Our own need can distract and overwhelm us with the details of our sin and our guilt. Blood always gets our attention, but it can make us feel queasy and uneasy. Jesus wants to lift our eyes above all that to his marvelous promise of forgiveness. Where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation. The Lord's Supper gives us a glimpse of the heavenly feast where we will eat of the eternal manna and drink from the river of God's delights forever.

Second Lesson: Philippians 2:5-11;  Gospel: John Matthew 21:1-11;

You are going about your daily business. There is a crowd. You are easily distracted by all the activity. It's a
holiday, and there are extra things to prepare. It is easy to focus on your personal task at hand and lose
sight of the bigger picture.
Focus! Look up! There is a King who presents himself so humbly that you might miss the importance of his
arrival. Hail the King who humbly comes to save us!

First Lesson: 2 Kings 4:17-37; Second Lesson: Romans 8:11-19;  Gospel: John 11:17-27, 38-45;

I recognize the danger of death. I am tempted to wonder whether my life was worth it if I do not leave a legacy or live on in the memories of my loved ones after I die. When my soul separates from my body, will I also be eternally separated from God in hell? Jesus promises much better. He promises life.

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: Isaiah 42:14-21
Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:8-14; Gospel: John 9:1-7, 13-17, 34-39

I recognize that I am spiritually blind when I don't know Jesus. I cannot see the world as it really is. I am tempted to see what is harmful as good, and what is good as meaningless. I cannot see the danger that lurks behind every temptation. I realize that Jesus gave physical sight to the blind. But he also gives me spiritual vision. He said, "I am the light of the world." He comes to shine his light into my darkened eyes so that I see him and live..

Sermon Message: John 4:5-20, 25-26
First Lesson: Exodus 17:1-7; Second Lesson: Romans 5:1-8; Gospel: John 4:5-20, 25-26

I recognize my deep spiritual thirst. I long for a good relationship with God and for everlasting life. I am tempted to satisfy that deep thirst with worldly things, a strategy doomed to failure. I realize that my thirst is satisfied only by the one who said, "Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst." Jesus meets my greatest need.

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: Romans 4:1-5,13-17
First Lesson: Genesis 12:1-8; Gospel: John 3:1-17

I recognize that I need to be saved. When Jesus said, "No one can enter the kingdom of God," that included me. I do not deserve God's blessing. But long ago, God declared that I would be blessed by a descendant of Abraham who turned out to be Jesus. The blessing is salvation. I receive that salvation by faith in Jesus as my Savior. The good news is that faith is also God's gift, imparted to me through the gospel.

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: Romans 5:12-19
First Lesson: Genesis 3:1-15; Gospel: Matthew 4:1-11

I recognize my inability to defend myself against spiritual enemies. The world is against me, but I
look for ways to imitate it. I try to master my own sinful flesh, but I recognize desires in myself
that war against my soul. And when it comes to the devil, I fall into temptation again and again.
My impending death proves that I have sinned.
I realize that what I really need is a champion. God the Father realized it too. He sent his Son to
be my Savior. Through the obedience of the Son of God, I have victory over my enemies.

First Lesson: Exodus 24:9-18; Second Lesson: 2 Peter 1:16-21 ; Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9

Jesus was a real human being, and he looked like it when he taught his disciples. But one day atop a high mountain, Jesus gave his disciples a glimpse of his glory as the Son of God. After he came down from the mountain, Jesus went to Jerusalem to suffer and die. It is good for us to view Jesus in glory on the mountain. It prepares us for Lent, and it prepares us for life.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches us that form and function are closely connected. That means that who we are influences what we do. When God called us to faith, he declared that we were something new: light, salt, his children. Jesus encourages us to be what God says we are as a way of blessing the world through us.

You may not feel blessed when you are hungry or insulted or mourning the death of a loved one. You may not be in the mood to boast when you feel foolish, weak, or lowly. But knowing your difficulties, Jesus still chose you to be his own. He gives you many gifts, and he calls you blessed.

The prophet Isaiah foretold that a light would shine on them. Enveloped by sin, suffering, and death, we find our minds and hearts clouded. But Jesus is revealed as the promised light. He shines his light by preaching repentance and the good news of the kingdom.

"Christ" is not the family name of Jesus. It is a title. The Greek word "Christ" and the Hebrew word "Messiah" both mean the same thing: "The Anointed One." Anointing was the practice of pouring liquid over the head of someone to signify selection for some special task. When the Lord had someone anointed, he also poured his Spirit over them. It was the fulfillment of promises made over centuries.

January 6? It is the day when the Christian Church celebrates the Festival of the Epiphany. Epiphany comes from a Greek word meaning "reveal." When the Savior was born, he was first revealed as love's pure light to Israelites: Mary, Joseph, the shepherds. Today we see the Lord miraculously guiding foreigners across countless miles so the Savior's holy face could be revealed to them as well.

When the sun rises, we can see things that we haven't seen before. When Christ the Savior is born, the light of new revelation breaks over the world. When the Son rises, we can clearly see the grace of God, our Redeemer.

The sinfulness of the world cannot rob us of the peace God intends to bring through his Son. Christ the Savior is born, and through his life, God brings us into the family. He gives us the rights of redeemed sons and daughters, the privileges of inheritance.

Sermon: Pastor David Pries
Sermon Message: John 1:1-14
First Lesson: Isaiah 52:7-10; Second Lesson: Hebrews 1:1-9; Gospel: John 1:1-14

From eternity, Jesus has been God, holy and majestic. When we look tenderly at the holy infant, we are looking at the same God who once told the prophet Moses, "No one may see me and live." Yet, Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds all saw their holy God and survived. How? God became human, hiding his glory within flesh, so that he could come to us without instilling fear or dread.
